DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIPS

Competitors have the option of competing in ATA tournaments throughout the year to earn points.   The larger the tournament, the more points a person can earn for placing 1st, 2nd or 3rd in each event as shown here:

Tourney Type             1st/2nd/3rd Pts

AAA ("Worlds")                    15/10/6

AA ("Nationals")                    12/9/5

A (Large Regional)                 8/5/2

B (Regional)                           5/3/1

C (In-school)                         3/2/1

Only 50% of points earned can come from Class C (In-school) tournaments which means that qualified competitors must have earned as least 1 point in larger tournaments.

Competitors earn points by placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd in these tournaments and their total points earned determines where they rank in their state.  To qualify for these District Championships, a competitor must be ranked in the top 10 in their state.   The North District is made up of Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa and Nebraska.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

At the end of the tournament year, ATA hosts the World Championships in Littlle Rock, AR.  To qualify for the World Championships, a competitor must either:

     - Be ranked in the top 10 in the world, or

     - Finish as District Champion

So, the competitors you watch today not only are competing for the District Champion title, but also for qualification for the World Championships and potentially be named "Word Champion!"

EVENTS

Each "event" (such as Forms, Weapons, Sparring, etc)  is treated separately.   A competitor may qualify for "Sparring" for example, but not qualify in "Forms" or another category.

For these District Championships and the World Championships, competitors will only compete in those events in which they have qualified.

Congratulations to all of the competitors at the North District Championships.  In order to qualify for this tournament and compete for the title of "District Champion" competitors had to rank in the top 10 in points in their respective state.
